On 18 – 21 August 2014 the Bulgarian Eurasia Open 2014 – International Series tournament with a prize pool of USD 5 thousand – was held in Sofia. The experimental scoring system has been probating at the tournament: the best of five games of 11 points.

Kharkiv was represented by Gennadiy Makhnovsky’s offspring Artem Pochtarev. Artem won the third place in men’s singles.

Artem Pochtarev (World No. 172) was eighth seeded and started competition in the main draw. In 1/16 final Artem won Frenchman Thomas Vallez (World No. 1277) – 11-4, 11-7, 8-11, 11-3; in 1/8 final he beat Swizz player Mathias Bonny (World No. 527) – 11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 11-4. In quarter final Artem met more serious opponent – the third seeded Slovenian player Iztok Utrosa (World No. 112) who resigned under the Ukrainian’s pressure: 11-10, 5-11, 11-6, 11-7.

In semifinal Pochtarev met the top seeded Polish player Michal Rogalski (World No. 85). Despite the big ranking gap the match could be over with Ukrainian victory, but with one-point gap in the fifth game the Polish player went to the final: 11-6, 11-2, 3-11, 9-11, 11-10.

"In Bulgaria for the first time I had the opportunity to play on the new scoring system. The new rules don’t allow relaxing. Under the old system, it was possible losing 5-11 to win the game, now it is already lost. So you need constant concentration. To me this is not always possible; I didn’t manage to win a single match with a score of 3-0. But, overall, I liked this system; I was even less tired; it was funny to change ends when a side first scores 6 points in the fifth game. It seems to me that with the new scoring system the intensity of the games will not decrease, the game will be more dynamic; and audience will like this”,-shared his feelings Artem Pochtarev.

Congratulations to Artem Pochtarev and Gennadiy Makhnovskiy on successful performance!
